1. Why was the Treaty needed?

         For the solution about the Maori language and the English language.

2. How many versions of the Treaty are there?

          There are 2 version of treaty that we tackle yesterday.

4. What was the issue with it?

          The Maori language have to make up to English.

5. What word should have been used instead of sovereignty/governorship?

           Mana

6. What does Tino Rangatiratanga mean?

           Absolute sovereignty.

7. What happened when a chief didn’t sign the Treaty?

           

8. What is pepper potting? What was its aim?

           Seperate the brown and the white. It is called pepper potting because the people are black.

9. What is the Native School Acts? What was its aim?

   Native School Acts it is the school that banished tht Maori language.

The Invetation of 1831

1. Who sent the invitation?To whom?

• It was sent from the Maori chiefs to Britain.
• (5 reasons)

1. The chiefs special trade and missionary contacts with Britain.
2. The chiefs ask the King to become friend and guardian.
3. The chiefs wants the King to save them from foreign threat.
4. The chiefs wants the King to save them from the teaying of other tribes.
5. The chiefs wants the King to save them from the bad behaviour of British people who live and visit New Zealand.

• James Busby was a Brittish Resident and they sent to New Zealand.
• James Busby's house where the Treaty known as The Treaty House .
• His job was to catch the escaped convict's from Australia and return them.

NZ First Flag

The  first flag was selected on 20 March 1834 by the chiefs.

The importance of the flag

• The first flag was called 'The flag of the Indepent Tribes of New Zealand'
• The flag was indicated to the chiefs and that New Zealand was an independent country with association with Britain.
• It was recognised by the King William IV and indicated to chief and Britain recognised tino rangatiratanga of the chiefs.
• It gave New Zealand-built ships a flag to fly which let their cargo go duty free into foreigns port.Busby arranged for New Zealand-bulit ships to be registered in the name of 'the Independets Tribes of New Zealand'.
• It was also flown on land, especially at the Bay of Islands.
• After the signing of the Treaty Waitangi, the Union Jack took its place. But the 1834 flag was still  used. In 1840 the European settlers in Wellington from the New Zealand Company refused to recognise authoriy in Auckland and the flew the flag of The Independent Tribes of New Zealan.
• The flag was alwasy important to the Maori. In 1902 there was a petition  to Parliament asking that the flag given to the Maori chiefs of New Zealand by King William IV be kepts as the standard f New Zealand.

A man called Wakefield created a company called "The New Zealand" company to put his immigration ideas into practice.

1. What were the ideas?
2. Create a poster using image to portray the ideas that Wakefield had try to outline about New Zealand?

• That it would give people room/more land.
